Across approximately 15 days, students develop active reading habits and learn to use strategies before, during, and after reading. They practise making predictions, activating prior knowledge, asking and answering questions, making connections, visualizing, retelling, and identifying important details. Students read and listen to fiction, informational texts, poetry, and texts connected to familiar Alberta and Calgary experiences. They distinguish between characters, setting, problem, events, main ideas, and supporting details, and participate in respectful partner and group discussions. Instruction includes explicit phonics, word-solving, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension practice suited to individual reading needs.
