Over approximately 15 days, students investigate soil as a natural resource and habitat. They learn that soils are made of different components, including minerals, organic matter, water, and air, and compare soils by colour, texture, particle size, moisture, and ability to support plant growth. Students examine the relationship between soil and living things, explore how soil is used by people, and consider ways to protect soil from erosion, contamination, and loss. Calgary-based examples may include soils from school grounds, Nose Hill Park, the Bow River valley, community gardens, and agricultural areas near the city. Students practise making observations, recording data, classifying samples, forming conclusions, and communicating evidence through science journals and models.
