Grade 2 Science: Investigating Materials, Forces, and Temperature

A four-part, inquiry-based Grade 2 Science curriculum aligned with the Alberta Program of Studies. Across approximately 60 instructional days, students investigate the properties and uses of liquids and solids, explore buoyancy and boat design, study magnetic forces, and examine hot and cold temperatures. Learning emphasizes observation, prediction, fair testing, evidence-based explanations, design challenges, safety, and connections to everyday life in Calgary.

Over approximately 15 days, students investigate and compare familiar liquids and solids, including water, oil, ice, sand, clay, and household materials. They learn to describe observable properties such as colour, texture, shape, hardness, flow, absorbency, and flexibility. Students classify materials according to their properties, make and record observations using drawings, charts, labels, and simple measurements, and explore how heating, cooling, mixing, and changing containers can affect materials. The topic develops scientific vocabulary and introduces students to fair tests, prediction, evidence, and safe investigation practices.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a properties investigation journal. Students examine and describe at least six solids and liquids using drawings, labels, sensory-safe observations, and a comparison chart.
  • Conduct a fair test to determine which material absorbs the greatest amount of water. Students make a prediction, control the amount of water used, record results, and communicate a conclusion.
  • Investigate reversible changes by freezing, melting, mixing, and separating selected materials. Students identify what changed and whether the original materials can be recovered.
