Over approximately 15 days, students establish routines for thoughtful listening, respectful discussion, fluent reading, and purposeful writing. They examine fiction and nonfiction texts to identify main ideas, important details, characters, setting, sequence, and connections to their own experiences. Students practise asking and answering questions, making predictions and inferences, summarizing short texts, and responding in complete sentences. Writing instruction focuses on generating ideas, organizing them into beginning-middle-end structures, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Students create a personal narrative about a meaningful experience in their school, family, or Calgary community, using descriptive language and appropriate conventions. Oral fluency, active listening, vocabulary development, spelling patterns, paragraphing, capitalization, punctuation, and sentence structure are reinforced throughout the unit.

Recommended Tasks
  • Maintain a reading-response journal for 10–15 minutes daily. For selected texts, record a prediction, two pieces of evidence, a question, and a personal or text-to-text connection.
  • Write, revise, and publish a personal narrative of approximately 2–3 paragraphs about a memorable experience. Include a clear sequence, sensory details, precise verbs, and an illustration or other representation.
  • Participate in a small-group literature discussion in which each student prepares one question, contributes an evidence-based response, builds on a peer’s idea, and completes a self-assessment of listening and speaking behaviours.
