A year-long learning path for Grade 4 students in Calgary, aligned with the Alberta English Language Arts and Literature Program of Studies. Across four approximately 15-day topics, students develop reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and representing skills through increasingly complex texts and authentic communication tasks. Indigenous perspectives, Canadian contexts, diverse voices, media literacy, and respectful collaboration are integrated throughout.

Students establish a foundation for effective communication by exploring how readers, writers, listeners, speakers, viewers, and representers make meaning. They will practise activating prior knowledge, asking questions, making predictions, identifying main ideas and supporting details, summarizing texts, and responding respectfully to others. Students will examine fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual texts, while developing routines for reading stamina, vocabulary growth, discussion, and personal reflection. In writing, they will plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish a personal narrative that includes a clear sequence, descriptive language, dialogue, and a purposeful conclusion.
