Over approximately 15 days, students explore the idea that every person is unique and belongs to several overlapping groups, including family, classroom, school, neighbourhood, cultural, linguistic, and recreational communities. They identify characteristics, interests, strengths, languages, traditions, and relationships that contribute to identity while learning to describe similarities and differences respectfully. Through stories, discussion, self-portraits, classroom mapping, and cooperative activities, students develop vocabulary such as identity, belonging, community, diversity, respect, responsibility, and inclusion. Students also investigate how people show that they belong and how classrooms can help everyone feel safe, valued, and included. Learning should acknowledge that students have diverse family structures and identities and should use inclusive language and examples.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create an “Our Classroom Community” identity collage or book page showing personal interests, strengths, languages, important people, and ways each student contributes to the class.
  • Complete a classroom belonging inquiry: identify places, routines, people, and actions that help students feel welcome, then collaboratively create a class belonging agreement.
  • Use partner interviews and a Venn diagram to compare two students’ interests or experiences, emphasizing respectful listening and the idea that differences and similarities both strengthen a community.
