Over approximately 15 days, students develop a strong understanding of whole numbers to 1,000. They represent numbers using concrete materials, pictures, expanded notation, and standard notation; compare and order numbers; locate numbers on number lines; estimate quantities; and identify place value relationships. Students use mental mathematics strategies for addition and subtraction, solve addition and subtraction problems involving numbers to 1,000, and explain the efficiency of different strategies. The unit emphasizes mathematical reasoning, flexible thinking, accurate computation, and clear communication of solutions.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a place-value portfolio containing models, expanded-form representations, number-line placements, and written comparisons for selected three-digit numbers.
  • Complete a real-world budgeting or school-supply problem set requiring addition, subtraction, estimation, and explanation of chosen strategies.
  • Participate in a number-talk routine and maintain a strategy journal describing at least five mental-math strategies, including compensation, decomposing, and using compatible numbers.
