Across approximately 15 days, students build a foundation for responding thoughtfully to literary texts, including short stories, novels, poetry, and Indigenous and culturally diverse texts. They learn to use comprehension strategies before, during, and after reading; identify theme, character, setting, conflict, point of view, and significant details; make supported inferences; and distinguish between personal response and evidence-based interpretation. Students examine how authors use language, imagery, dialogue, and text structure to communicate ideas about identity, belonging, relationships, and community. They will participate in discussions, maintain reading-response notes, and compose a developed literary response supported by specific textual evidence.

Recommended Tasks
  • Maintain a 15-day reading journal with predictions, questions, inferences, vocabulary, personal connections, and evidence from the text. Include at least three revised entries that move from an initial reaction to a supported interpretation.
  • In small groups, compare how two texts develop a similar theme or address a similar issue. Prepare a discussion contribution using a claim, textual evidence, and explanation.
  • Write and revise a 3–5 paragraph literary response explaining how a character, narrator, or literary device contributes to a central idea or theme. Complete a peer-feedback and self-assessment checklist.
