During this approximately 15-day topic, students establish routines for speaking, listening, reading, and responding. They learn to participate in discussions, ask and answer questions, retell and sequence events, and make personal and text-to-self connections. Daily word work develops phonological awareness, phonics, spelling patterns, high-frequency words, syllable knowledge, and vocabulary. Students practise selecting appropriate books, using illustrations and text features, monitoring comprehension, and reading short texts with increasing accuracy, fluency, and expression. The topic concludes with a personal reading profile and a short oral or written response to a shared text.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a personal reading profile that identifies reading interests, preferred formats, reading goals, and one strategy the student will practise.
  • Complete a weekly word-study routine involving phoneme manipulation, decoding and encoding words with taught patterns, high-frequency word practice, and a short dictated sentence.
  • After reading a picture book, poem, or short informational text, produce a beginning-middle-end retelling or main-topic-and-details response using drawings, labels, and complete sentences.
