Students investigate what it means to be a citizen in a democracy and how decisions are made at municipal, provincial, and federal levels. They examine democratic ideals such as fairness, equality, rights, responsibilities, representation, and the rule of law. Learning includes the roles of elected representatives, Indigenous governments, courts, media, community organizations, and individual citizens. Students analyze how people participate in public decision making through voting, consultation, advocacy, petitions, protest, volunteering, and respectful dialogue. They will apply these ideas to a contemporary Edmonton or Alberta issue and evaluate different perspectives before proposing a reasonable civic action.
