Over approximately 15 days, students investigate how individuals, communities, governments, and institutions interact in a democracy. They explore Canadian levels of government, the roles and responsibilities of citizens, rights and responsibilities, decision-making processes, representation, majority rule, minority rights, and how public policy affects quality of life. Students analyze current and local issues, distinguish between evidence and opinion, and practise respectful discussion, collaboration, consensus-building, and civic action. Learning should connect to Calgary and Alberta examples, including municipal services, school governance, elections, and community organizations.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a three-level government organizer identifying selected municipal, provincial, and federal responsibilities, then apply it to a local issue such as transit, parks, education, or environmental protection.
  • Participate in a structured classroom council or mock election. Students research an issue, develop evidence-based positions, listen to opposing perspectives, deliberate, vote, and reflect on the strengths and limitations of the process.
  • Complete a civic-action proposal that identifies a community need, affected stakeholders, possible solutions, and a realistic action students could take through advocacy, volunteering, or communication with a decision-maker.
