Over approximately 15 days, students build foundational understanding of what a community is and how communities are shaped by geography, history, culture, and the people who live there. They investigate their own community in Calgary and compare it with another Alberta community, including an Indigenous community or a community with which students have a personal connection. Students use maps, photographs, oral histories, and observations to examine how land, climate, natural resources, and built environments influence where people live and how communities develop. Learning emphasizes respectful language, local knowledge, diverse perspectives, and the idea that communities can be understood in many different ways.
