A four-topic, approximately 60-day Grade 6 mathematics curriculum designed around the Alberta Programs of Study and Calgary Board of Education emphasis on problem solving, mathematical communication, reasoning, representation, and connections. Students develop conceptual understanding through concrete materials, visual models, discussion, practice, and authentic application.
4 topics · 40 questions total
Across approximately 15 days, students develop flexible understanding of whole numbers, decimals, fractions, ratios, rates, and percents. They read, represent, compare, and order numbers using place-value charts, number lines, base-ten materials, and visual fraction models. Students strengthen strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division involving whole numbers and decimals, and connect fractions, decimals, ratios, and percents in meaningful contexts. They investigate factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers, greatest common factors, and least common multiples. Students also solve and explain multi-step problems involving money, measurement, discounts, unit rates, and integer contexts such as temperature and elevation. Emphasis should be placed on estimation, mental mathematics, reasonableness, multiple solution strategies, and clear mathematical communication.
