Students establish the key concepts and skills needed for Grade 8 Social Studies. They explore the meaning of worldview and examine how beliefs, values, knowledge, geography, technology, and social structures influence the way people interpret the world. Students investigate the medieval European worldview, including feudalism, the role of the Catholic Church, social hierarchy, trade, education, and relationships between people and the natural environment. They learn to distinguish primary and secondary sources, identify perspective and bias, construct timelines, and use evidence to explain historical change.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a worldview profile for a medieval European social group, such as a peasant, noble, merchant, knight, or member of the clergy, using evidence from maps, images, legal documents, and historical accounts.
  • Construct an annotated timeline showing major developments from the medieval period to the beginning of the Renaissance, including changes in trade, cities, education, technology, and political organization.
  • Complete a source-analysis portfolio using the OPVL or origin-purpose-value-limitation method for three primary sources, followed by a short evidence-based response explaining the medieval European worldview.
