Over approximately 15 days, students develop strategies for understanding and responding to fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and oral texts. They activate prior knowledge, make predictions and connections, identify main ideas and supporting details, sequence events, infer character feelings and author meaning, and distinguish fact from opinion. Students practise active listening, respectful discussion, vocabulary development, fluency, and comprehension monitoring. Learning emphasizes selecting appropriate strategies before, during, and after reading or listening, and using evidence from a text to explain thinking. Students complete a personal reading-response portfolio that demonstrates increasingly specific and text-supported responses.

Recommended Tasks
  • Maintain a daily reading-response journal in which students record predictions, connections, questions, unfamiliar vocabulary, main ideas, and evidence from independent or shared texts.
  • Complete a text-evidence inquiry comparing a fiction selection and a nonfiction selection on a related theme; students identify key information, make an inference, and present their conclusions in a small-group discussion.
  • Create and deliver a short book talk that includes a concise summary, a description of the text’s audience and purpose, two text-based reasons for recommending or not recommending it, and an oral self-assessment.
