Students establish a strong foundation for Grade 6 literacy by learning to approach fiction, nonfiction, poetry, digital texts, and visual texts strategically. They will activate prior knowledge, make predictions and inferences, identify main ideas and supporting details, summarize objectively, determine the meaning of unfamiliar words, and distinguish fact, opinion, and interpretation. Students will support responses with specific textual evidence and examine how point of view, setting, character, organization, and visuals influence meaning. The topic culminates in a comparative response in which students analyze two texts addressing a related theme or issue.

Recommended Tasks
  • Maintain a reading-response journal for independent and shared reading, recording predictions, questions, inferences, vocabulary, summaries, and cited evidence at least three times per week.
  • Complete a paired-text evidence chart comparing a literary text with a nonfiction, media, or visual text on a common topic; use the chart to write a structured compare-and-contrast response.
  • Participate in a student-led discussion or literature circle, then submit a reflection explaining how textual evidence changed, confirmed, or deepened the student’s interpretation.
