A 60-day Grade 3 Science learning path aligned with the Alberta Program of Studies and Calgary Board of Education approaches. Students investigate materials and structures, apply testing and design processes, explore invisible forms of energy, and develop an understanding of sound through hands-on inquiry, discussion, modelling, and evidence-based problem solving.

Across approximately 15 days, students investigate the properties and uses of common materials, including wood, paper, plastic, metal, fabric, clay, and recycled materials. They compare materials according to characteristics such as strength, flexibility, hardness, absorbency, texture, and waterproofness. Students explore how the shape, arrangement, and combination of materials affect the strength and stability of structures. Through observation, fair tests, and collaborative construction challenges, students learn to select materials for specific purposes and communicate their design thinking using labelled diagrams, models, and scientific vocabulary.
