Students establish foundational Grade 9 literacy practices by learning how to read, view, and listen actively across a range of short texts. They examine how authors and creators communicate identity, culture, values, conflict, and perspective through characterization, setting, point of view, imagery, tone, and structure. Students practise annotating, asking interpretive questions, supporting ideas with evidence, and developing thoughtful personal and critical responses. The topic culminates in a comparative response to two texts that address a shared theme from different perspectives.
