Over approximately 10 days, students examine why societies establish governments and how Canada’s democratic system operates. They learn about the responsibilities and limitations of municipal, provincial, territorial, and federal governments; the roles of elected representatives, political parties, media, and citizens; and the relationship between parliamentary democracy, the Constitution, and the rule of law. Students investigate Calgary and Alberta governance and compare aspects of Canada’s system with another democratic system. Learning should include Treaty 7 perspectives and discussion of the relationships among Indigenous nations, the Crown, and Canadian governments.
