Across approximately 15 days, students develop active reading habits and strengthen comprehension of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual texts. Students practise making predictions, asking and answering questions, identifying characters, setting, problem, important details, main ideas, and sequence. They learn to use text features such as headings, labels, captions, diagrams, glossaries, and illustrations. Lessons include phonics and word-study reinforcement, vocabulary development, reading fluency, retelling, and connections between texts and personal experience. Students use gradual-release routines—teacher modelling, shared reading, guided reading, partner practice, and independent reading—to become more strategic and confident readers.

Recommended Tasks
  • Maintain a 15-day reading response journal with a combination of written responses, labelled drawings, questions, predictions, retellings, and text-to-self or text-to-world connections.
  • Complete a nonfiction text-feature scavenger hunt and create a one-page “How this text helps me learn” response using headings, captions, diagrams, and key vocabulary.
  • Create and present a story map or beginning-middle-end retelling for a selected fiction text, supporting ideas with details from the text.
