A six-topic, approximately 60-day Grade 8 Science learning path aligned with the Alberta Programs of Study and suitable for the Calgary Board of Education. Students develop scientific inquiry skills and apply them to matter, cellular systems, mechanical systems, and freshwater and saltwater environments. Learning progresses from observation and evidence collection to modelling, design, systems thinking, and a final interdisciplinary investigation.

Students establish the practices needed for successful Grade 8 Science, including laboratory safety, accurate observation, measurement, data organization, variables, fair testing, evidence-based explanations, and scientific communication. They learn to distinguish observations from inferences, identify independent and dependent variables, represent relationships using tables and graphs, and evaluate the quality and limitations of evidence. Students are introduced to systems thinking by identifying components, inputs, outputs, interactions, and feedback in familiar natural and technological systems. The topic culminates in a short investigation in which students develop a question, plan a fair test, collect evidence, and communicate a conclusion.
