Grade 2 Mathematics: Building Mathematical Understanding and Confidence

A four-part, 60-day learning path aligned with the Alberta Mathematics Program of Studies as implemented through Edmonton Public Schools. Students develop number sense, operational fluency, patterns and algebraic reasoning, spatial and measurement understanding, and data literacy through concrete materials, visual representations, discussion, problem solving, and authentic applications.

Students develop a strong understanding of whole numbers to 1,000 by representing numbers with concrete materials, drawings, expanded notation, standard notation, and number lines. They compare and order numbers, estimate quantities, identify benchmark numbers, and explain the value of digits. Students build flexible addition and subtraction strategies for numbers to 1,000, including composing and decomposing numbers, using mental math, compensation, open number lines, base-ten blocks, and standard algorithms where appropriate. They solve one- and two-step problems, assess whether answers are reasonable, and communicate their strategies using mathematical language, pictures, equations, and labels.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a personal place-value portfolio containing base-ten models, expanded forms, number-line representations, comparisons, and explanations for selected numbers from 0 to 1,000.
  • Complete a classroom mathematics marketplace in which students estimate, add, subtract, and compare prices or quantities, explaining the strategy used for each calculation.
  • Solve a collection of addition and subtraction story problems, including missing-part and comparison problems, and show at least two different strategies for selected questions.
