Across approximately 15 days, students establish routines for thoughtful reading, active listening, oral communication, and collaborative discussion. They learn to activate prior knowledge, make predictions and connections, identify main ideas and supporting details, distinguish fact from opinion, ask and answer increasingly complex questions, and use context clues, word parts, dictionaries, and glossaries to develop vocabulary. Students respond to fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and multimedia texts by identifying purpose, audience, key information, character or speaker perspectives, and personal or textual connections. The unit concludes with a small-group discussion and a concise response demonstrating comprehension and evidence-based thinking.
