Students establish Grade 8 reading routines and learn to interpret fiction, poetry, drama, and literary nonfiction. They examine character development, conflict, setting, theme, point of view, symbolism, tone, and figurative language. Students practise annotating, making evidence-based inferences, distinguishing summary from analysis, and supporting interpretations with accurately selected textual evidence. The topic culminates in a comparative literary response that explains how authors use specific techniques to communicate ideas.

Recommended Tasks
  • Maintain an annotation journal for a short story, poem, and dramatic scene, recording predictions, questions, vocabulary, inferences, and evidence.
  • Write a structured literary paragraph or short essay comparing how two texts develop a shared theme or address a similar human experience.
  • Participate in a seminar or small-group discussion in which each student contributes an interpretation supported by direct textual evidence.
