Students develop fluency with integers, fractions, decimals, and percentages as rational numbers. They compare and order rational numbers, represent them on number lines, apply the four operations, use order of operations, and solve practical percentage problems involving discounts, taxes, tips, markups, and percent increase or decrease. Students explain strategies using models, diagrams, estimation, and mathematical language.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a rational-number reference guide showing equivalent fractions, decimals, percentages, number-line representations, and examples of all four operations.
  • Complete a multi-step financial investigation involving discounts, sales tax, tips, and a fixed budget; justify estimates and exact calculations.
  • Participate in a classroom number-line activity in which students order and compare positive and negative fractions, decimals, and percentages.
