Approximately 15 days. Students build the foundational skills needed for reading and writing by listening for rhymes, syllables, beginning and ending sounds, and individual phonemes. They review and apply letter-sound relationships, including short vowels, common consonants, consonant blends, and frequently used letter patterns. Students practice blending and segmenting sounds, reading decodable words and simple sentences, and recognizing high-frequency words. Oral language is emphasized through partner conversations, retelling familiar stories, describing experiences, asking and answering questions, and using complete sentences. Students begin to understand that spoken words can be represented in print and that illustrations, text direction, spacing, and punctuation support meaning.
