Over approximately 10 days, students investigate ecosystems as systems of interacting living and non-living components. They classify biotic and abiotic factors, examine food chains and food webs, trace the flow of energy, and explore relationships such as predation, competition, cooperation, and symbiosis. Students use local Alberta examples, including prairie, parkland, forest, wetland, and urban ecosystems, to explain how changes to one population or resource can affect an entire ecosystem. Scientific inquiry skills include observation, questioning, data collection, modelling, and evidence-based explanation.
