Students establish the inquiry skills and conceptual vocabulary needed for the course. They examine globalization as a complex economic, political, cultural, technological, and environmental process. Students learn to distinguish fact, opinion, interpretation, and bias; evaluate primary and secondary sources; identify perspective and worldview; and formulate inquiry questions. The topic concludes with an evidence-based explanation of how globalization affects everyday life in Calgary and beyond.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a concept map defining globalization, interdependence, identity, culture, sovereignty, human rights, and citizenship, using local and international examples.
  • Complete a source-analysis investigation using news articles, advertisements, statistical data, photographs, and social media posts about a globalization-related issue.
  • Write a short inquiry response answering: “Where do I see globalization in my daily life?” Support the response with at least three credible sources and a reflection on source bias.
