Across approximately 15 days, students build the foundational skills needed to participate successfully in classroom communication and early reading. They listen actively, follow and give simple directions, speak in complete sentences, ask and answer questions, and contribute to partner and group discussions. Students develop phonological and phonemic awareness through activities involving rhyme, syllables, beginning and ending sounds, blending, segmenting, and manipulating sounds. They review letter names and sounds, connect sounds to graphemes, read and spell high-frequency words, and apply decoding strategies to carefully selected decodable texts. Students also learn basic print concepts, including directionality, spaces, punctuation, and the relationship between spoken and written language.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a personal alphabet and sound book: students add a letter, keyword, picture, and sentence for selected sounds, revisiting entries throughout the topic.
  • Participate in a daily oral-language routine that includes turn-and-talk, retelling a short story, describing an object, or answering a question using complete sentences.
  • Read a set of decodable books and complete a “word detective” activity identifying letter-sound patterns, high-frequency words, punctuation, and one sentence that demonstrates understanding.
