Grade 4 Mathematics: Building Number Sense, Patterns, Space, and Data

A four-topic, 60-day learning path aligned with the Alberta Grade 4 Mathematics Program of Studies used by Edmonton Public Schools. Students develop fluency with whole numbers and operations, connect patterns to equations, investigate geometry and measurement, and use data and probability to solve and communicate mathematical problems. Each topic is designed for approximately 15 instructional days and includes exploration, guided practice, problem solving, formative assessment, and application.

Students build a strong foundation in place value and number sense by representing, comparing, ordering, and rounding whole numbers to 10,000. They develop flexible strategies for addition and subtraction, recall and apply multiplication facts, and use efficient written and mental methods for multiplication and division involving whole numbers. Students solve multi-step problems, estimate to check reasonableness, interpret remainders, and explain their thinking using models, equations, and words. The topic concludes with an introduction to fractions as parts of wholes and sets, including comparing and ordering fractions with common denominators and connecting fractions to number lines.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a place-value portfolio in which students represent selected numbers using base-ten blocks, expanded notation, standard notation, number lines, and real-world contexts; include comparison and rounding challenges.
  • Complete a grocery-store or classroom-budget investigation requiring addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students must estimate first, show at least two strategies for one calculation, and explain whether an answer is reasonable.
  • Design a fraction number-line poster using fraction strips or paper folding. Students locate, compare, and justify the positions of fractions with common denominators, then complete a short problem-solving reflection.
