Over approximately 15 days, students establish shared classroom routines for reading, writing, listening, speaking, and collaboration. They explore how readers use phonics, context, vocabulary, fluency, and background knowledge to make meaning. Students read a range of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual texts, identify personal reading interests, and respond to texts through discussion, drawing, and short written reflections. In writing, students review complete sentences, capitalization, punctuation, nouns, verbs, adjectives, and paragraph organization. They learn to generate ideas, draft clearly, revise with feedback, and publish a short personal narrative or reading response. The topic emphasizes respectful communication, active listening, and confidence in expressing ideas.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a personal reading profile and select independent reading texts from several genres; complete brief reading-response entries that identify important events, new vocabulary, questions, and personal connections.
  • Write, revise, edit, and publish a one- or two-paragraph personal narrative about a meaningful experience, using a beginning, middle, and end, descriptive details, and complete sentences.
  • Participate in a small-group literature discussion using prepared sentence stems such as “I agree because…,” “I noticed…,” and “I wonder…,” then submit a reflection on listening and collaboration skills.
