Students establish reading identities, practise active reading strategies, and learn to respond thoughtfully to a range of short stories, poetry, nonfiction passages, and visual texts. They will make predictions, ask questions, infer meaning, identify important details, summarize, and support interpretations with specific textual evidence. Students will also examine how personal experiences, cultural perspectives, and prior knowledge influence responses to texts. The topic concludes with a developed personal and critical response to a selected text.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a reading profile and personal reading goals, then maintain a double-entry reading journal recording questions, connections, inferences, and evidence.
  • Complete a close-reading response to a short story or poem that explains a theme and supports the explanation with correctly integrated quotations or paraphrased evidence.
  • Participate in a structured literature-circle discussion and submit a reflection evaluating preparation, listening, and contribution to the group.
