Grade 1 Science: Exploring Colour, Change, Design, and the Senses

A four-topic, approximately 60-day Grade 1 Science learning path aligned with the Alberta Program of Studies used by Edmonton Public Schools. Students investigate colour, seasonal change, materials and structures, and how their senses help them learn about the world. The sequence emphasizes observation, questioning, fair testing, safe participation, communication, and hands-on inquiry.

Over approximately 15 days, students explore how colours can be observed, named, sorted, mixed, and changed. They distinguish between primary and secondary colours, investigate colour mixing with paints and transparent materials, and compare how colour appears under different conditions. Students practise making careful observations, recording results with drawings and simple charts, identifying patterns, and communicating evidence-based conclusions. Learning should include opportunities to connect colour to art, nature, clothing, signs, and classroom design. Students will also develop safe habits when using art materials and learn that investigations can be repeated to check results.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a colour-mixing investigation using primary-colour paints or transparent cellophane. Predict the resulting colours, record observations, and explain which mixtures produced secondary colours.
  • Complete a classroom colour walk. Sort and graph found objects by colour, then identify patterns such as the most common colour or places where particular colours are used.
  • Design a colour-signal poster for a classroom routine, explaining how the selected colours communicate information and testing whether classmates interpret the signals consistently.
