A four-unit, 60-day Grade 2 Mathematics learning path aligned broadly with the Alberta Programs of Study and Calgary Board of Education emphasis on conceptual understanding, communication, problem-solving, multiple representations, and meaningful mathematical connections. Each topic is designed for approximately 15 instructional days and includes exploration, guided practice, independent application, and assessment.

Students develop flexible number sense with whole numbers to 1,000. They represent numbers using concrete materials, pictures, expanded notation, and standard notation; compare and order numbers; skip-count by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 100s; estimate quantities; and explain the role of each digit in a three-digit number. Students model and solve addition and subtraction problems within 1,000 using mental strategies, base-ten materials, open number lines, drawings, and standard algorithms when appropriate. The unit emphasizes selecting efficient strategies, checking reasonableness, explaining thinking orally and in writing, and applying operations to one- and two-step contextual problems. Multiplication and division are introduced through equal groups, repeated addition, sharing, and grouping situations.
