Grade 3 Science: Investigating Materials, Earth, Sound, and Design

A complete 60-day Grade 3 Science learning path aligned with the Alberta Program of Studies used by Edmonton Public Schools. Students develop scientific inquiry skills while investigating materials and structures, rocks and minerals, and sound. Each 15-day topic includes hands-on exploration, evidence-based explanation, design challenges, communication, and opportunities for assessment.

Over approximately 15 days, students learn how scientists and engineers investigate the properties of materials and use evidence to solve problems. They explore properties such as strength, flexibility, absorbency, waterproofing, hardness, texture, and buoyancy. Students make predictions, conduct fair tests, record observations in tables and diagrams, compare results, and explain why a material may be suited to a particular purpose. The topic culminates in a design challenge in which students select and combine materials to create a solution to a practical problem, such as protecting an object, carrying a load, or keeping something dry. Emphasis is placed on identifying a question, controlling variables, using measurements, improving a design, and communicating results.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a materials investigation chart by testing a selection of classroom materials for properties such as flexibility, strength, absorbency, and waterproofing. Students make predictions, record evidence, and write a conclusion.
  • Plan and conduct a fair test to determine which material is most suitable for a specified purpose. Students identify the variable being tested, keep other conditions consistent, and present results using a table or graph.
  • Complete a materials engineering challenge, such as designing a waterproof container or a structure that supports a specified mass. Students produce a labelled design, test a prototype, revise it, and explain how evidence informed their changes.
