Grade 5 Mathematics: Number, Patterns, Geometry, and Data

A four-unit, 60-day Grade 5 Mathematics learning path aligned with the Alberta Program of Studies and suitable for Edmonton Public Schools. Students develop computational fluency, mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, communication, and connections to everyday contexts. Each topic is designed for approximately 15 instructional days and includes formative assessment, collaborative learning, and opportunities for multiple representations.

Over 15 days, students build fluency with whole numbers to 1,000,000 and apply place-value understanding to estimation, rounding, comparison, and computation. Students use standard algorithms and flexible mental-math strategies to multiply up to three-digit numbers by two-digit numbers and divide three-digit numbers by one-digit numbers, interpreting remainders in context. The unit emphasizes selecting appropriate operations, estimating before calculating, representing problems with diagrams or equations, explaining reasoning, and checking whether answers are reasonable. Students solve multi-step problems involving money, time, distance, and classroom or community data. Suggested pacing: Days 1–3 place value and representations; Days 4–5 comparison, ordering, and rounding; Days 6–10 multiplication and division; Days 11–13 multi-step problem solving; Days 14–15 review and assessment.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a place-value portfolio that represents selected numbers in standard, expanded, and word form, then orders and rounds them in several ways.
  • Complete a real-world multi-step investigation such as planning a class event within a budget, showing estimates, equations, calculations, units, and a written justification.
  • Design and solve two multiplication or division problems for a classmate, including an answer key, an estimate, and an explanation of how the remainder should be interpreted.
