Grade 8 Mathematics: Alberta and Edmonton Public Schools

A six-topic, approximately 60-day Grade 8 mathematics learning path aligned with the Alberta Program of Studies and compatible with Edmonton Public Schools priorities for problem solving, mathematical communication, reasoning, representation, and the effective use of technology. Students develop fluency with number, algebra, geometry, measurement, statistics, and probability before applying these ideas in an integrated final investigation.

Students strengthen their understanding of integers, fractions, decimals, and rational numbers and use them in authentic problem-solving situations. They investigate perfect squares, perfect cubes, square roots, and cube roots through visual models, estimation, factorization, and calculators. Students compare and order rational numbers, perform operations accurately, and explain why their strategies work. The topic emphasizes estimation, mental mathematics, mathematical vocabulary, and checking the reasonableness of solutions.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a visual number-line portfolio showing the locations and comparisons of integers, fractions, decimals, and irrational square roots such as √2 and √10.
  • Complete a square-root investigation using tiles, graph paper, and a calculator to estimate non-perfect square roots between two consecutive perfect squares.
  • Solve a set of multi-step financial, temperature, elevation, and measurement problems involving all four operations with rational numbers; include an explanation and reasonableness check for each solution.
