A year-long Grade 5 Social Studies learning path aligned with the Alberta Program of Studies and Calgary Board of Education priorities. Across four approximately 15-day topics, students investigate Canada's geography, Indigenous histories and contemporary perspectives, democratic governance, and the diverse identities and responsibilities that shape Canadian society. Learning emphasizes inquiry, multiple perspectives, evidence-based communication, respect for Treaty relationships, and connections to local Calgary and Alberta contexts.

Students develop foundational geographic knowledge of Canada by locating provinces, territories, major landform regions, bodies of water, and population centres. They investigate how climate, landforms, natural resources, transportation routes, and environmental conditions influence where people live and how communities develop. Students use maps, atlases, digital mapping tools, photographs, graphs, and geographic vocabulary to compare regions, including Alberta and the Calgary area. The topic concludes with an inquiry into how Canadians can use resources responsibly while protecting ecosystems and respecting Indigenous relationships with the land.
