Over approximately 15 days, students establish classroom communication routines and develop confidence as listeners and speakers. They will practise active listening, asking relevant questions, building on others’ ideas, expressing opinions with reasons, retelling and summarizing experiences, and adapting language for different audiences and purposes. Students will explore how tone, facial expression, gestures, and word choice affect meaning. They will participate in partner conversations, collaborative discussions, oral storytelling, and short presentations. Instruction will explicitly address respectful turn-taking, clarifying questions, complete sentences, vocabulary development, and oral conventions. The unit culminates in a prepared oral presentation or storytelling performance supported by visual or physical representations.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a personal introduction or interest presentation that includes an organized beginning, middle, and ending; practise delivery with a partner and revise using peer feedback.
  • Participate in structured literature-circle or discussion routines, using sentence starters to agree, disagree respectfully, ask for clarification, and extend a classmate’s idea.
  • Retell a familiar story or personal event from a different perspective, using descriptive vocabulary, appropriate volume, pacing, expression, and supporting gestures.
