Students develop the scientific inquiry skills needed throughout the year. They learn to ask testable questions, identify variables, make predictions, design fair tests, collect and organize qualitative and quantitative data, recognize patterns, evaluate evidence, and communicate conclusions. Students explore measurement, accuracy, reliability, laboratory safety, ethical investigation, and the difference between observations, inferences, hypotheses, and explanations. Learning activities use familiar phenomena from Edmonton, such as melting snow, soil, shadows, water filtration, and changes in local weather. Students also consider how scientific knowledge is developed, revised, and communicated, including the value of multiple ways of knowing and respectful local and Indigenous perspectives on observing relationships in the natural world.
