Over approximately 15 days, students develop active reading and viewing strategies using a range of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, digital texts, and visual media. They learn to activate prior knowledge, make predictions, identify main ideas and supporting details, infer meaning, summarize, ask meaningful questions, and support responses with evidence from texts. Students examine character, setting, plot, conflict, point of view, theme, text features, and the author’s purpose. They also practise distinguishing fact from opinion and recognizing how images, layout, and word choice influence meaning. The topic concludes with a personal and critical response to a selected text using specific evidence and clear explanation.

Recommended Tasks
  • Maintain a reading-response journal for at least three texts, recording predictions, questions, inferences, important details, unfamiliar vocabulary, and evidence-based reflections.
  • Complete a fiction and nonfiction comparison using a graphic organizer, then write a structured response explaining how each text communicates its central message or purpose.
  • Participate in a text-based discussion or book club and complete a final response that identifies a theme or main idea, cites evidence, and explains the student’s interpretation.
