Students investigate ecosystems as interconnected systems. They examine populations, communities, habitats, food chains, food webs, energy flow, nutrient cycling, and limiting factors. Students collect and interpret ecological data, explore how changes to one component affect others, and use local Alberta examples such as parkland, prairie, wetlands, and urban ecosystems. Learning emphasizes observation, systems diagrams, evidence-based explanations, and responsible environmental decision-making.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a food web for a local Alberta ecosystem and explain how energy and matter move through it; predict the effects of removing or adding one species.
  • Conduct a schoolyard or local-area biodiversity survey, record observations in a data table, and present patterns and possible sources of error.
  • Complete a systems-thinking case study on a changing ecosystem, using a cause-and-effect diagram to explain at least three interactions.
