Over approximately 15 days, students investigate the sources, properties, and impacts of waste in their homes, school, and community. They classify waste as recyclable, compostable, reusable, or disposable; examine how materials change through decomposition, recycling, and re-use; and explore how consumer choices affect the environment. Students learn to gather and organize data, identify patterns, compare solutions, and explain how individual and community actions can reduce waste. Learning culminates in an evidence-based school waste-reduction proposal or awareness campaign connected to Edmonton’s local context.
