Students establish classroom communication routines and explore how identity, culture, perspective, and experience shape language use. They read a range of short fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual texts, then practise active listening, discussion, annotation, and personal response. Students learn to support interpretations with specific textual evidence and review the writing process, including planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. The topic culminates in a polished personal response that connects a text to the student’s own experiences or observations.

Recommended Tasks
  • Maintain a reading-response journal for several short texts, recording questions, connections, significant details, and emerging interpretations.
  • Participate in structured small-group discussions using assigned roles such as facilitator, evidence finder, connector, and summarizer.
  • Write, revise, and publish a personal response or literacy narrative that uses specific details, organized paragraphs, and deliberate word choice.
