Grade 5 Science: Investigating Earth, Living Systems, Matter, and Electricity

A complete 60-day Grade 5 Science learning path aligned with the Alberta Program of Studies and Calgary Board of Education approaches. Students investigate observable patterns, design and conduct fair tests, collect and interpret evidence, communicate explanations, and connect scientific ideas to local Alberta environments and everyday technologies. Each topic is designed for approximately 15 instructional days.

Students investigate weather as a dynamic Earth system by observing and recording temperature, precipitation, wind, cloud cover, air pressure, and humidity. They learn to use weather instruments and symbols, interpret weather maps and data tables, identify patterns over time, and explain how weather forecasts are developed. Students distinguish between weather and climate and examine how weather affects people, plants, animals, and communities in Alberta. The unit emphasizes accurate measurement, controlled observation, data representation, evidence-based predictions, and the responsible communication of weather information.

Recommended Tasks
  • Maintain a 10-day local weather journal using observations and measurements of temperature, wind, cloud cover, and precipitation; represent the results in tables and graphs and identify at least three patterns.
  • Construct and calibrate simple weather instruments, such as a rain gauge, wind vane, or anemometer, then compare student-generated measurements with an official weather report.
  • Create and present a three-day weather forecast for a selected Alberta community, using weather symbols, maps, data, and a written explanation of the evidence supporting the forecast.
