Students establish a foundation for Grade 10 English Language Arts by examining how identity, culture, perspective, and experience shape communication. They learn and practise close-reading strategies, including annotation, questioning, inference, summarizing, identifying diction and tone, and supporting interpretations with precise textual evidence. Short fiction, poetry, personal essays, and visual texts provide opportunities to compare perspectives and develop respectful discussion habits. Students begin a reading-response portfolio that will continue throughout the course.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a personal literacy and identity map, then write a reflective response explaining how language, culture, community, or experience has shaped the student’s perspective.
  • Annotate a short story or poem using a close-reading system that identifies key ideas, literary techniques, questions, inferences, and significant evidence.
  • Participate in a seminar comparing how two texts represent belonging or identity; submit a post-seminar reflection identifying one developing interpretation and one question for further inquiry.
